Sinner wins tiebreaker thriller

After the disappointing... Out in Montreal A few days ago Jannik Sinner (ATP 12) got back on the road to success. However, the game against Thanasi Kokkinakis (ATP 75) was a tough one. Both Sinner and Kokkinakis showed impressive tennis in the first set. Apart from uncertainties at the beginning, the South Tyrolean had to fend off three break chances in the first game, both played their serve games consistently and without any pressure. So it was no surprise that the first set had to be decided in a tiebreak. Several highlight-worthy rallies and defended set balls from both players created an absolute spectacle. In the end, Sinner's backhand landed a few millimeters behind the baseline and the Australian took the first set.

Already in the first rallies it became clear that Kokkinakis would cause serious problems for the South Tyrolean. But in the second set it seemed as if the Australian had awakened the bear in Sinner. Suddenly Kokkinakis could no longer keep up with the birthday boy and with a pressing superiority he got two breaks at short intervals to make it 4:1. Aside from a slip-up when the score was 4:2, when Sinner had to give up his serve, the 21-year-old skilfully played down the rest of the set and equalized to 1:1. The game was decided in the third set.

The Australian, who was listed significantly lower, showed great tennis on Tuesday. In the third set, Kokkinakis again managed to meet Sinner on an equal footing and demand everything from him. In the later games both players came dangerously close to a break, but the server always managed to postpone any decision until another tiebreak. After 3:17 minutes, Jannik Sinner used his second match point in the tiebreak with the score at 7:6 and raised his arms in triumph. A possible revenge? This means the South Tyrolean will move into the second round of the Masters tournament in Cincinnati. Who Sinner will meet there will be decided in the subsequent game between Pablo Carreno Busta and Miomir Kecmanovic. If Carreno Busta overcomes his opponent, Sinner will get revenge for the defeat in Montreal.
