Sinner curiosity: Suddenly 526 ATP places are gone

First of all: Don't worry! Jannik Sinner is still in a top position in the individual ranking. He has lost one position compared to the previous week, but 13th place is still an outstanding position. The Sesto native is still the highest-ranked Azzurro in the world, with Matteo Berrettini following in 15th place.

Nevertheless, when you look at Jannik Sinner's profile, a curiosity emerges: In the double ranking, the Pusterer is in 785th position. This is bizarre in that the newly minted 21-year-old (his birthday was on August 16th) was in 259th place the previous week and has now lost no less than 526 (!) places. That's a neat number, but it's easy to explain.

Because Sinner made it to the quarterfinals together with Hubert Hurkacz at the Masters 1000 tournament in Cincinnati last year, he was credited with 180 points there. These counters were now no longer counted. This year Sinner hardly played doubles and therefore scored few points. In addition, the point gap in these spheres of the world rankings is extremely close, which is why 180 points means a lot. This is also how the loss of 526 places comes about. Doubles as a training option But that won't worry Jannik Sinner. The doubles is primarily an additional training opportunity for the Pusterer; his focus is exclusively on the singles. And there the super talent is still one of the crème de la crème. World number 1 is still Daniil Medvedev. The Russian has been claiming the place in the sun since June 13th.
