Sinner makes it official: “We’re going our separate ways.”

If Jannik Sinner is one of the top 10 in the tennis world today, then his coach Riccardo Piatti has a big part in it. The successful coach - who has also looked after Novak Djokovic - has shaped the Puster rough diamond into one of the best players on the planet over the last eight years. But the façade of the relationship between the two, which seemed so harmonious, apparently recently developed some deep cracks. The media has been speculating about a separation between Sinner and his staff for a week, and on Wednesday evening the 20-year-old South Tyrolean confirmed this on social media.

“After many successful years together, my coaching staff and I have decided to go our separate ways,” said Sinner, who thanked his team. Conditioning coach Dalibor Sirola and physiotherapist Claudio Zimaglia will no longer be part of the team, as will Andrea Volpini, who often accompanied Sinner to tournaments. “I would especially like to thank Riccardo (Piatti), who has taught me many things and will always be a part of my tennis. Many special memories were made and I will always look back fondly on this time.” Different ideas Sinner does not comment on why the break ultimately occurred. It is assumed that the South Tyrolean no longer agreed with the programming, immediate goals and tournament planning of his previous teacher. The crisis came to a head at a meeting on Tuesday.

Sinner and Piatti no longer trained together this week. The young star completed a few units with Simone Vagnozzi in his adopted home of Monte Carlo. The 38-year-old from Ascoli, a good friend of Sinner's agent Alex Vittur, could also look after the Pusterer in the future. His greatest achievement as a coach: In 2018 he completely unexpectedly led Marco Cecchinato to the semi-finals of the French Open. Magnus Norman as super coach? The Swede Magnus Norman is considered the new super coach. The former world number 2 has previously looked after Stan Wawrinka, who won three Grand Slam tournaments under his leadership.
