Sinner after thriller: “It’s not that easy anymore”

In the end it was a match of equals that Jannik Sinner played against Olympic champion Alexander Zverev. But he lost in 3 sets and was eliminated from the US Open. After more than a month and a half overseas, we're now heading back home.

Regarding the match against Zverev, Sinner said: “It wasn’t easy. He served well. It was difficult to return his serves. I tried a little bit and kept changing my position on the return. We were a little tense in the first set. But it wasn't easy to play in light and shadow. But once we got used to the conditions in the third set, there were more rallies and we both raised the level. I had my chances, especially in the third set. I wanted to take the set, but I didn't manage it." The Pusterer showed his best tennis in the finish: "I read his serve better and better, but when he serves on the line, it's just not easy. I think Zverev fully deserved the win.” In the 2nd phase of development Sinner sees itself in the second phase of its development. “If you have nothing to lose at the start of your career, you go on the pitch and hit your shots. But it's not that simple anymore. The other players know you now.”

Sinner was satisfied with the US Open despite the elimination on Monday. “The first two rounds were different. I was the clear favorite there. In addition, Svadja played really well in round 2. Against Monfils I knew that I had to play well and have a lot of long rallies. It wasn't easy physically and mentally. It was a great match from both of us.”

And how was the match against Zverev? “Today it was different again. Mentally more demanding. But I think I can be proud of the week and the tournament I played. But I still have a lot to improve and will take a short break to be ready for the rest of the season. I’ve been here in the US for quite a long time.” Lots of positives In addition to winning the tournament in Washington, Sinner takes home a lot of positive things. He has won 9 of 13 matches in the last few weeks. “We work hard every day and have a goal in mind. Of course we try to improve day by day and I try to give 100 percent on good and bad days. Sometimes I feel good on the pitch, sometimes I don’t, but it’s always important to give 100 percent.”

A lot has changed. “When I was 16, I knew I wanted to play tennis. But I think it's a little different now. I know how good I can play tennis and that's why the attitude is a little different. Apart from the tournament in Toronto, I was always there. I had my chances to win in every match, even if I lost. I’m 20 and I’m proud to be in this position (16th in the world), I have to say that.”

After 5 tournaments in North America (Atlanta, Washington, Toronto, Cincinnati, US Open), Sinner returns to Europe and to the ATP tour from September 20th in Metz. The following week he is registered in Sofia, where he is the defending champion.
