Sinner starts the new year with a defeat

As a reminder: The tournament was actually supposed to take place in Canberra, but due to the bushfires in Australia the tournament had to be moved to Bendigo, around 620 kilometers to the west.

Sinner (ATP 78), who was seeded number 3 and received a bye in the first round, faced Emil Ruusuvuori (ATP 1) on the night from Monday to Tuesday. In the end he had to admit defeat to the Finn 123:1 and 02:3 after 6:4 hours of play. The 6-year-old Scandinavian was the expected unpleasant opponent, after all, he won four Challenger tournaments last year.

In Bendigo, Ruusuvuori made life difficult for the South Tyrolean shooting star and pulled away with a break to make it 4-2. The world number 121. didn't let anything go wrong on his own serve and won the first period of the game with 25:6 points after just 3 minutes. In the second set, Ruusuvuori even took the lead 5-2 with a double break. Sinner reduced the score to 4:5 with a rebreak, but immediately afterwards the Finn converted his first match point to make the final score 6:4.

Sinner will now prepare for the first Grand Slam tournament of the year, the Australian Open (January 20th to February 2nd).

Seppi is the clear favorite So the South Tyrolean hopes lie with Andreas Seppi (ATP 72), who will celebrate his debut in Bendigo on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday. The 35-year-old from Kalter, who is starting his 18th professional season, is number 2 in the tournament and will face Zhe Li in the second round. The Chinese, 2 years younger, number 209 in the world, slides in place of the injured South Korean Hyeon Chung (former World number 19) as a lucky loser in the main draw, where he sent Australian wild card player Akira Santillan (ATP 247) home 6:4, 6:0. Seppi and Li have never faced each other in their careers.
