Sinner and Schwartzman squeeze into the round of 16

On Easter Sunday, Jannik Sinner stepped onto the sand of Monte Carlo, his adopted home, together with his doubles partner Diego Schwartzman. The South Tyrolean, who lives right next to the tennis courts, and his Argentinian teammate did extremely well against Marcel Granollers (ATP No. 20 in doubles) from Spain and Horacio Zeballos (ATP No. 18 in doubles) from Argentina after a convincing first set difficult. In the end, the Sinner/Schwartzman duo defeated the doubles specialists by a narrow margin in the tie-break (6:3, 1:6, 11:9) and moved into the round of XNUMX.

The South Tyrolean and his Argentinian partner were superior to the Granollers and Zeballos pair in every respect in the first set and took the first service game from their opponents. This happened through joint efforts: First Schwartzman sank a ball on the line past Granollers, then Sinner resisted two attacking balls directly to the body at the net and thus earned the break with the necessary stability. In the rest of the set, serves alternated according to plan - a break against the South Tyrolean was never an option.

The game was a little different in the second set. Suddenly the opponents from Spain and Argentina kept up. The weak phase of Sinner and Schwartzman, whose serve began to weaken, was immediately taken advantage of when Granollers used a smash to break 3-1. Sinner also seemed unsettled and subsequently gave up a serve game. Granollers and Zeballos held strong and convincingly won the second set 6:1.

As is usual in ATP Masters tournaments, the game was decided in a tie-break up to 10 points. Sinner and Schwartzman initially fell behind, but then regained the lost breaks and caught up. Two extremely strong serves from the 21-year-old paved the way to a narrow 11:9 tiebreak victory at the crucial moment.

In the round of 10.00, the duo will face the winner of the game between Francisco Cerundolo/Daniel Evans and Andreas Mies/Fabrice Martin, who are expected to take the field on Monday at 45 a.m. (CEST). Sinner could also cross paths with his doubles partner in another form. Because the South Tyrolean will start the singles tournament in Monte Carlo on Tuesday or Wednesday in round two against the winner of the game between David Goffin (ATP 36) and Schwartzman (ATP XNUMX).
