Sinner's Davis Cup dream is over

Just shortly before, Sinner had defeated Croatian Marin Ciclic in a passionate game (the detailed report is available here) and thereby kept the Azzurri's hopes alive. The score was 1:1 after two matches in the Davis Cup quarter-finals between Italy and Croatia, the doubles now had to bring the decision. After a short break of less than an hour, Sinner was back on the pitch in the Pala Alpitour Arena in Turin. Together with Fabio Fognini he played against the Croatian duo Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic for a place in the next round. Even before the game it was clear that this task would be anything but easy. And so it was. The Croatians presented themselves as too strong and too ripped off. After 2:1 hours of play and at times a big fight, the Azzurri had to admit defeat in two sets with 20:2 and 3:6. Croatia won the Davis Cup quarter-finals 4-6. At times, the 20-year-old from South Tyrol and the 34-year-old from Sanremo fought a self-sacrificing battle against the currently best doubles team in the world. In difficult phases they demonstrated mental strength and were often on equal terms. Hanging your head wasn't an issue. Would you like an example? In the first set, when Sinner/Fognini were already behind by a break (4th game), the Croatian tennis aces took a 5-2 lead with a score of 40:0. However, the Azzurri fended off a total of 5 set and match points in this game and came back to 3:5. Immediately afterwards, the nerve-racking Croatians converted the first set point. Fight for every ball In the 2nd set, Sinner and Fognini fended off a break point in the 3rd game. After both doubles served their serves, the two Croatians managed the break to make it 4:3. The Azzurri continued to fight for every ball and Sinner appeared to be in good physical condition despite the short break. On their own serve they came back to 4:5 without losing any points. They always captivated the audience. But Mektic and Pavic left no doubt that they largely have this game under control. Confident, calm and worthy of their status as the world's best duo, the two won the game on their own serves with the first match point. For the Azzurri, the initial disappointment will soon give way to the certainty that there is still a lot in store for this young team in the next few years. Jannik Sinner in particular once again presented himself as mentally and physically strong. He did his homework by beating Marin Cilic. The crux of the matter was this Lost in the first duel of Lorenzo Sonego (ATP 27) against Borna Gojo. This came as more than a surprise and was not planned. With an overall score of 2-1, Croatia made it to the Davis Cup semi-finals. This and the final will take place in Madrid at the beginning of December.

Of course it wasn't his fault. Jannik Sinner did his homework and bravely defended himself in the doubles with Fabio Fognini against the world's best duo. In the end it wasn't enough.
