Sinner's big comeback in a turbulent match

Actually, Jannik Sinner, who has been number 17 in the world since this week, should have started the tournament in Lyon on Tuesday. But the match against the Russian whiz kid Aslan Karatsev (ATP 25) had to be postponed to Wednesday due to rain. In the end, the South Tyrolean prevailed in a turbulent match with 0:6, 6:3, 6:4 and is in round 2.

The first round encounter on the red clay in Lyon was turbulent for a number of reasons. One of them was the completely botched start of Sinner. Nothing came together in the first set for the South Tyrolean, but Karatsev - who stormed into the semi-finals of the Australian Open out of nowhere this year and was also able to win the ATP 500 tournament in Dubai - played great. The 27-year-old took away all service games from the Pusterer in the first round, in which it rained heavily at times.

After 35 minutes it was 0:6 from Sinner's point of view. The last time such a mishap happened to the shooting star was in October 2020, when he also failed to score a point in a set against Gilles Simon in Cologne. In the end, however, he was able to win that duel - and that should also be the case on Wednesday. Because in the second set not only did the weather get better, but so did Sinner. The 19-year-old got better and better with Karatsev's game and took the service from his opponent twice right at the start. Karatsev managed the re-break straight away, but Sinner didn't let anything go wrong and equalized the match with a score of 6:3. One hour break So it went into the third and decisive set. But here the weather initially spoiled the game and the game had to be interrupted for around an hour due to the rain. At that point, Karatsev was leading 2-1. After the restart, the two tennis stars had an open exchange of blows in which they initially delivered their serves confidently.

As the match continued, Sinner appeared more energetic and determined than his counterpart. Nevertheless, the Pusterer first had to thwart a break chance in order to strike ice-cold himself in return: Sinner made it 5:4 and - a total of three and a half hours after the start of the game - earned two match points, one of which he used to win. Now a Frenchman is waiting In the second round on Thursday, Sinner will face the 25-year-old French lucky loser Arthur Rinderknech (ATP 125), who knocked out the Swede Mikael Ymer in three sets. In a possible quarter-final there could be a duel with Dominic Thiem (ATP 4), who now has the Briton Cameron Norrie (ATP 49) in front of him.
