Sinner's cream performance against Sonego

Sinner wanted to defend an impressive series on Friday in the southern French city on the Mediterranean, after all, he had never lost a game against a compatriot at ATP level. The balance was five wins and zero defeats. In order to survive against Lorenzo Sonego, who didn't have to give up a set in the first two games of the tournament and feels perfectly comfortable in the hall anyway, the best version of Sinner was necessary. The Sesto native also knew that, as he presented himself extremely well and ultimately won 6:4 and 6:2. After the bye at the start and Marton Fucsovics' withdrawal, Sinner is already in the semi-finals. On Saturday he will meet the 18-year-old Frenchman Arthur Fils (ATP 163).

In contrast to the Australian Open, where Sinner started well and cautiously, he was immediately wide awake in Montpellier. The South Tyrolean didn't notice that it was his first match this week. He particularly shined when it came to returns: Sinner almost always sent his opponent's hard serves back into the court - and with a good length. The result was an early break to make it 2-1.

But Sonego also showed all his qualities. The 27-year-old from Turin created a lot of pressure with his forehand and also defended strongly. He immediately regained his loss of serve, only to receive another break immediately afterwards. As a result, a sentence developed at eye level, which Sinner won because he kept a cool head in the important moments. Sonego, on the other hand, missed opportunities - especially in the final game. First a simple forehand flew out of bounds, then a volley into the net.

Perfect second sentence Winning the set gave the favorite self-confidence: his punches were now even more precise, harder and longer than before, which was hard on Sonego. With the score at 2-0, Sinner missed three chances for a double break, which kept the match open. However, the break was only postponed: thanks to strong passing balls and failed net attacks by Sonego, Sinner escaped to 5:1. He didn't let this advantage be taken away from him. After a little more than an hour and a half, Sinner, who was now playing spectacularly, used his third match point.

Almost three weeks after his elimination from the Australian Open, Jannik Sinner got back into the ring on Friday at the ATP 250 tournament in Montpellier. The South Tyrolean showed an excellent performance in the duel with Lorenzo Sonego (ATP 56) and made it to the semi-finals.
