Sinner's seventh trick: winning the title in Montpellier!

Jannik Sinner met an atypical player in his eighth ATP final: Maxime Cressy, born in Paris, raised in the United States, is the only professional in the top 100 to practice the almost extinct game of serve and volley. After every serve, the 25-year-old comes to the net, where he is one of the best in his profession. But Sinner knew what to expect, after all, he had won the only duel so far at the Challenger in Lexington in 2019. The match in the Sud De France Arena, which has space for 10 fans, started nervously: First Cressy destroyed as many break points after two double faults, a short time later Sinner was behind 700:0 on his own serve. The South Tyrolean stayed cool and avoided a break that could have decided the set against such a type of player. When the initial excitement was over, both played their service games confidently. The logical consequence? Tiebreaker. In this, the Sexten player started furiously with his usual strong returns and ran away to 40-4. Cressy didn't give up, but Sinner didn't let the butter be taken away from the bread and bagged the set after 0 minutes.

Cressy is running out of energy In the second round, the American looked ailing - and not just because he continually had his middle finger treated. Thanks to the incredible serve and volley skills, the 2-meter man stayed on. When the score was 4:3 from Sinner's point of view, things got tricky: Darren Cahill's protégé earned the first break chances of the set. Cressy thwarted the first with a risky second serve, but then Sinner benefited from a clever volley and grabbed the break. As a result, serving out was just a formality.

Sinner thus won his seventh title on the ATP tour and further expanded his impressive final record: out of a total of eight finals, only one was lost. This shows: When a lot is at stake, the South Tyrolean is there! This is not the only reason why South Tyrolean fans can look forward to a successful tennis year in 2023.

Last year, Jannik Sinner had to wait until the end of July before he could lift a trophy. This year, the South Tyrolean won his first title in February: On Sunday, the 21-year-old beat Maxime Cressy (ATP 250) in the final of the ATP 51 tournament in Montpellier.
