Sinner's worry lines despite victory in Vienna

After his clear success over the Chilean Cristian Garin, Jannik Sinner has also mastered his next hurdle at the ATP tournament in Vienna. In his fourth appearance in the Wiener Stadthalle, he eliminated Cerúndolo after 90 minutes of play.

The Sexten player started the game perfectly. After he got through his own service to zero, he was able to take the serve from Cerúndolo and take the lead 2-0. In return, Sinner received the rebreak, and from then on an exchange of blows developed on equal terms. How well does the ankle hold up? When the score was 4:4, Sinner was 40:0 ahead on his own serve, then lost four points in a row and suddenly had breakball against him. He fended off this with his first ace of the game and won the game 5:4 thanks to his strong first serve. Nevertheless, worry lines appeared because the man from Sexten was moving increasingly erratically. Every now and then Sinner grabbed his damaged ankle. The timing on the forehand was often wrong and some forehand errors crept into the sext player's game. In the last two games of the first set, Sinner took advantage of his class and broke Cerúndolo to win the set and score zero.

The second movement began similarly to the first. Sinner broke Cerúndolo to make it 2-0 and was able to defend the break this time. Cerúndolo then fought back to 2:3 and made the set open again. From this point on, Sinner turned up the heat, took the Argentinian's serve again and moved away to 5:2. Sinner served to win the match and had to fend off a break point at 30:40 before ending the game with an ace.

When asked about his foot injury, which was not yet 100% recovered, the man from Sexten replied: “I felt something in the morning, a match is simply a different strain than just training. The most important thing is to keep going.” Medvedev is waiting in the quarterfinals In the tenth ATP quarter-finals of the current season, Sinner will face the tournament's number one, Daniil Medvedev, who prevailed against crowd favorite Dominic Thiem. Sinner has never been able to win against the Russian, who has also returned from injury. If he wants to prevail against Medvedev, the South Tyrolean will probably have to improve a bit.

After Sinner eliminated Casper Ruud, among others, on his way to the semi-finals last year, his final stop was in a hard-fought semi-final against the well-known Francis Tiafoe.

Number three in the set list Andrey Rublev lost out to the Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov. After his defeat against Medvedev, Dominic Thiem announced that he would end his season early.
