Sparkasse Trophy 2016 bigger than ever

The tournament in Rungg is a highlight of the South Tyrolean sporting year. A constant that has constantly evolved over the years. The organizers held the Sparkassen Trophy (prize money: $1998) for the first time in 6250, and in 2016 it belonged to the Futures category “$25.000 + Hospitality”. That means: The prize money is $25.000 and the athletes stay at the organizers' expense. This is the highest category of ITF futures. The tournament's reputation in the tennis circuit has been outstanding for years - among players, coaches and visitors. The game is not only for prize money of $25.000, but also for valuable ATP points. The winner will be awarded 35 points towards the world rankings, exactly the same number as for reaching the semi-finals of a $100.000 Challenger.

From Rungg to the top of the world Once again this year, the audience in Rungg will see some of the stars of tomorrow. As a reminder: Martin Klizan, this year's winner of the German Open at Hamburg's Rothenbaum, played in Rungg in 2009 and is currently in the top 30 in the world rankings. Kitzbühel triumphant and top 50 player Paolo Lorenzi also has Rungg experience: as a 19-year-old in 1999, he received a wild card and played his way to the quarter-finals. Other prominent Rungg starters were Simone Bolelli, Ivan Dodig and of course South Tyrol's tennis ace Andreas Seppi, who won his first world ranking point in Rungg in 2000.

Last year's winner Gaio was top seed The brilliant winner of the Sparkassen Trophy 2015 was the Italian Federico Gaio. And he recently showed himself to be in absolutely top form. The 24-year-old celebrated two tournament victories in the recent past. He won the ATP Challenger tournaments of San Benedetto del Tronto ($30.000) and Biella ($85.000). What is particularly worth mentioning is that in Biella he sensationally defeated the Brazilian top 50 player Thomaz Bellucci in two sets. With the victory, Gaio moved into the top 200 of the world rankings for the first time and once again played the role of the top favorite for the Sparkassen Trophy 2016.

The group of favorites includes the two youngsters Pedro Cachin (ARG) and Zdenek Kolar (CZE). The 19-year-old Czech Kolar improved from position 653 to position 288 in the world rankings within a year. He most recently showed off his extraordinary talent at the ATP Challenger in Prague when he had to give up in the semi-finals against Santiago Giraldo.

The schedule Around 60 tennis professionals from all over the world will be at the start in Rungg. The Sparkassen Trophy begins on Saturday, August 6th at 9 a.m. with the two-day qualification, which also represents an opportunity for South Tyrol's best tennis players to compete with professionals from all over the world. The best eight from the qualification will then play in the 8-strong main field from Monday, August 32th, for which the big favorites have already qualified.

The main draw and thus the actual hunt for ATP points begins on Monday. The final is scheduled for Saturday, August 13th at 11 a.m. The double final will take place on Friday, August 12th. The game is played all day in Rungg, with a top match taking place in the early evening.
