Sparkasse Trophy: Fabbiano, Linzer and Gaio continue

Top favorite Thomas Fabbiano (ATP 200) stopped 18-year-old Andrea Pellegrino (ATP 2069), who is Italy's number 1 among 18-year-olds, in the midday heat today. The result was 6:2, 6:4, although Pellegrino failed mainly due to the lack of evaluation of his chances on break balls: he only converted one of six break balls. Otherwise the match was extremely even - Fabbiano scored 65 points, Pellegrino 57.

In tomorrow's quarter-finals, Fabbiano will face another 18-year-old, the Italo-Argentinian Francisco Bahamonde (ATP 663). This was against the Austrian Maximilian Neuchrist (ATP 389), the boss on the pitch, although he is almost 300 places behind him in the world rankings. The match only seemed to tip over once, when Neuchrist went from 0:4 to 5:4 in the first set. When Bahamonde won the tiebreaker 7:4, Neuchrist's resistance was broken (7:6, 6:1). With the four ATP points won in Rungg, Bahamonde will move into the top 600 in the world for the first time in his career. Both Bahamonde and Andrea Pellegrino are coached by the Italo-Argentinian Tomas Tenconi, who won at Rungg in 2008.

Linzer and Gaio easily in the quarterfinals After his two-set win against Canadian Steven Diez (ATP 277), the Austrian co-favorite Michael Linzer (ATP 752) is waiting for the winner of the evening game Patrick Prader (ATP 1187) against Pietro Rondoni (ATP 805). Today – like yesterday – Federico Gaio (ATP 5), who was number 297, impressed. The 6:2, 6:1 against the Brazilian Bruno Sant'Anna (ATP 609) was exactly the same result as yesterday against Giorgio Portaluri. Gaio only allowed a single break point and scored 60 points compared to Sant'Anna's 38 - it couldn't be much clearer.

A little later, the last of the six Brazilians who started in the main field on Monday was eliminated: The 17-year-old junior Wimbledon winner Orlando Luz (ATP 566) found his master in the Venezuelan Davis Cup player Ricardo Rodriguez (ATP 409). Rodrigruez was clearly the stronger player at 6:3, 6:3.

Giannessi has to give up Co-favorite and 2011 Rungg finalist Alessandro Giannessi (ATP 247) gave up today. As was the case yesterday against the Brazilian Rafael Matos, an inflammation of the pubis hampered him today against the Belgian Yannik Reuter (ATP 455). After Giannessi lost the first set 2:6 and was unable to use three break points when the score was 1:0 in the second set, he withdrew.

Barbian Patrick Prader will contest the last round of 16 in the late afternoon against Italian qualifier Pietro Rondoni.
