Sparkassen Trophy: Lindell beats Balzerani in the final

In a high-class final he defeated Riccardo Balzerani (ATP 670) after almost 2,5 hours of play with 6.2, 4:6, 6:3.

Former Davis Cup player Lindell started strong and took the first service game from Balzerani. With another break to make it 4-1, the 27-year-old laid the foundation for later winning the set. In the second, too, everything seemed to be clear for Lindell until the score was 4:2, but Balzerani fought his way back into the match. He took the Swede's serve and equalized to 4:4. It was the Italian's best phase, who managed a second break a little later to make it 6:4. At the beginning of the third sentence there is a similar picture to the first. Lindell took the service from Balzerani twice and thus brought about the preliminary decision. The Italian was able to get a break back, but it wasn't enough. When Balzerani served, Lindell, who has already won two ITF tournaments this year, converted his first match point to make it 2:6.

Lindell: “I served excellently” For Lindell it was revenge for the lost semi-final at the ITF tournament in Bolzano last week: “This experience certainly helped me. Balzerani is an extremely strong receiver, I knew I had to stay focused and serve well to win the match. “I managed to do that excellently for most of the game today,” said Lindell. “I had a slump in the middle of the second set, which was mainly due to the extreme heat. Luckily I was able to recover in time.” For the Swede, the former number 177 in the world, the tournament victory is worth 20 ATP points and around 3.239 euros in prize money. Finalist Balzerani was still satisfied after his defeat: “I'm currently in very good shape. I hope that I can continue playing like this and fight my way up the ATP rankings this year,” said Balzerani. He left it open to what extent: “I just think from match to match. If I keep working hard, the successes will come.”

Both finalists were full of praise for the “Sparkassen Trophy” at the award ceremony: “Everything was perfect. The organization, the accommodation, the atmosphere on the complex. I had a wonderful time in Rungg,” said Lindell. “It was a wonderful week, the hospitality and professionalism of everyone involved was exceptional,” said Balzerani. Pfeifer: “More balanced than ever before” The conclusion of the tournament director, Dietmar Pfeifer, is also positive: “It was another great tournament with many high-class and particularly close matches - much to the delight of the many tennis fans. The field was more evenly balanced than ever before.” The local players used the “Sparkassen Trophy” as an opportunity to compete with players from all over the world: “8 South Tyroleans played in the qualification, 3 in the main field.” In addition, it was successful with Andrey Golubev, the former number 33 in the ATP rankings, to bring to Rungg, said Pfeifer. The fact that players like the top Kazakh player Golubev are coming proves that the tournament has a good standing on the international tennis scene. This was confirmed not least by Guido Pezzella, head referee of the “Sparkassen Trophy”: “I have been there as a supervisor for the 6th year now and can say that the tournament is one of the best in the ITF circus. I feel at home in Rungg.” Double crown to Golubev/Alves In the doubles competition, immediately after the singles final, the top seeds Andrey Golubev and Felipe Meligeni Rodrigues Alves prevailed 6:4, 6:4 against Christian Lindell and Daniel Dutra Da Silva. Andrey Golubev and Felipe Meligeni Alves won the doubles final.
