Strong start to Wimbledon: Seppi moves into round 2

The 37-year-old Seppi (ATP 90) went into the game against Sousa as the slight favorite. Less because the Portuguese is “only” ranked 120th in the world, but more due to the fact that Seppi feels more comfortable on grass than the Iberian. In the end, the South Tyrolean lived up to his role and defeated Sousa 4:6, 6:4, 7:5 and 6:2.

The opponents started the match concentrated and almost error-free was pushed back due to rain. Seppi and Sousa mostly played their serves confidently, even if there were one or two break points. Ultimately, it was the Portuguese who managed the first break of the game when the score was 4:4 and was ultimately able to win the first set 6:4. Seppi turns things up a notch There was a different picture in the second set, when both conceded a quick break - but then found their way back on track. Seppi underlined his good form and put more and more pressure on Sousa, whose preferred terrain is the clay courts. Finally, the Kalterer man managed a second break, which brought him the equalizer to make it 1-1.

Sousa's toughest resistance was broken. The 32-year-old had little to offer Seppi. The crux of the game was 3-1 when Seppi secured the break after numerous long rallies. Finally, the South Tyrolean converted his first match point to victory after 3:13 hours. In the next round, Seppi will face the American Denis Kudla (ATP 114).
