Bonfiglio: Sinner misses a match point in the quarterfinals and is eliminated

The 16-year-old from Sesto was the only Italian to make it to the quarterfinals of the Bofiglio men's tournament. After Thursday's win against the Czech Jonas Foretjek, Sinner was in the quarter-finals of the Internazionali d'Italia Juniors for the first time in five years. The last time Stefano Napolitano managed this was in 2013, and Gianluigi Quinzi won the tournament the year before. Sinner also caught up with his role model Andreas Seppi at the Bonfiglio, who also reached the quarter-finals in Milan in 2001 and 2002. The best South Tyrolean result remains Florian Allgäuer's victory in 1997, when he defeated Peruvian Luis Horna in the final.

On Friday, Sinner, accompanied by his coach Andrea Volpini, met Naoki Tajima, who is ranked 18th in the U18 world rankings. The match was very even from the start. Until the score was 4:4, both Sinner and the Japanese took the service once each. In the ninth game, the Puster player managed the next break to take the lead 5:4. Immediately afterwards he converted his first set point to make it 6:4.

In the second half of the game, however, Tajima promptly moved ahead to 4-0. A little later the Japanese won 6:1. This was also Sinner's first set loss in the entire tournament.

So this match had to be decided in the third set. Tajima made it 2-0 with an early break, but Sinner immediately countered with the rebreak. Then he took the lead 5:4 and had a great chance to close the bag, but was unable to convert a match point. In the tiebreak, Tajima showed better nerves and won 7:2.
