Davis Cup: Strong Seppi loses opening match against Pouille

Seppi is celebrating his comeback in Liguria after his hip injection on Friday. In the sold-out “Valletta Cambiaso” stadium in Genoa, the “Azzurro” and France’s number 1 showed extremely strong tennis. The game was very even until the eighth game, when Pouille made the only decisive break to take the lead 5:3. Immediately afterwards, the 24-year-old from Grande-Synthe converted his first set point to make it 6:4.

Pouille dominated the second half of the game, where he promptly took a 4-0 lead. Seppi already ticked off this set and lost it with 2:6 points. In the third set, the Kalterer player played as if from one piece: Seppi put Pouille under constant pressure, forced him to make many mistakes and confidently served his own serve. In the tenth game, the “Azzurro” had two set points on the Frenchman’s service. Seppi converted the first one to make it 6:4, so the match was completely open again.

The 34-year-old from Kalteren, cheered on by the audience, made it 4-3 in the fourth set. Seppi managed this lead cleverly and also won this set 0:6. So this high-class match went into the fifth, decisive set, where Seppi ran out of steam with the score at 3:1. The South Tyrolean lost the next five games and had to admit defeat to Pouille 1-2 after 55:6 hours of play.

Italy's number 1 Fabio Fognini is challenged in the second individual match. The “Azzurro” faces Jeremy Chardy (ATP 80). On Saturday, however, the doubles are on the program at 14 p.m. Here Italy has announced the Bolelli-Lorenzi pairing, but captain Barazzutti will only decide shortly before the match who will play. The last two individual matches are on the program on Sunday. Fognini will face Pouille at 11.30 a.m., while Seppi will complete the quarter-finals against Chardy. Kalterer and Chardy faced each other twice: Seppi won the Australian Open in 2015, two years earlier the Frenchman always had the upper hand in Melbourne.
