Heller defeats Sinner in the ITF final in Val Gardena

The German Peter Heller has won the first edition of the $15.000 ITF tournament “Val Gardena Südtirol Raiffeisen”. The world number 393 clearly defeated the 17-year-old Jannik Sinner from Sesto in just one hour of play in the final with 6:1 and 6:3 and secured not only 18 ATP points but also 1.944 euros in prize money.

Sinner, on the other hand, had to make do with 1.145 euros and 10 ATP points, but will appear in the top 900 of the world rankings next week. In general, Sinner can be very satisfied with his performance in Val Gardena. For the first time in his career he reached an ITF final in singles and his double victory with Giacomo Dambrosi yesterday in the final against the French Maxime Mora and the Italian Nicolò Turchetti was also a first.

But there was nothing to gain for the Pusterer on Saturday. Right at the start of the match he had to give up serve twice and was 0:4 behind. After almost half an hour, Sinner lost the first set 1:6. The experienced Heller, who is exactly nine years older than Sinner and, like the Sesto native, celebrated his birthday in St. Christina this week, didn't let anything go wrong afterwards and moved away to 4:1. After exactly 61 minutes of play, he used his first power ball to make the final score 6:3. For Heller it is the 7th ITF success overall, the third in the last three months after Antalya and St. Pölten. He played his most difficult match in St. Christina yesterday in the semi-finals against Alexander Weis from Bolzano, when he only won 2:29, 4:6, 6:3 after 6:4 hours of play.

In general, the Val Gardena tournament was a huge success for the South Tyroleans. A total of 13 local players took part, Joy Vigani from Brixen reached the quarter-finals (he failed because of Sinner), Weis reached the semi-finals and Sinner reached the final. Weis and Sinner will be hitting the main draw of the $15.000 tournament in Cuneo from Monday.
