ITF: Hofer and Vigani fail at the start

The 20-year-old from Val Gardena, who qualified directly for the main draw in Hammamet, reached the quarter-finals in Tunisia last week. On Wednesday, Hofer surprisingly had to pack his bags in round 1 against Russian qualifier Anna Makhorkina.

The number 1183 in the WTA rankings showed strong tennis, forced Hofer to make many mistakes and took the first set 6:4. In the second part of the game, the South Tyrolean dominated the game, secured two breaks and won 6:2. In the third, decisive set, Hofer only served her serve twice and had to admit defeat again 2:11 after 4:6 hours of play.

Vigani misses match point and is eliminated Joy Vigani successfully passed the qualification in Sharm El Sheikh and moved back into the main draw of an ITF tournament after 14 months. The last time, in November 2016, the 21-year-old from Brixen also played in the main draw in Sharm El Sheikh, where he even made it to the final, but then failed against the Ukrainian Manafov. Vigani met Croatian Domagoj Biljesko, current world number 766, in the first round today.

The South Tyrolean dominated the start of the game, took the service from his opponent three times and won the first set 6:2. In the second half of the game, Vigani even missed a match point when the score was 5:4. Both players then continued their service until the tiebreak. Here Biljesko had the better end with 7:3.

In the third set, Vigani's strength weakened, but he still kept up well with the Croatian. In the eighth game, Biljesko secured the break to take a 5:3 lead. But Vigani didn't give up and won three games in a row to make it 6:5. The man from Brixen then had to give up his serve and this match was decided in a tiebreak. Once again it was Biljesko who showed better nerves and was able to win 7:4 after almost three hours of play.

ITF: Hofer and Vigani fail at the start

Verena Hofer from Ortisei and Joy Vigani from Brixen were eliminated in the first round of the $15.000 ITF tournaments in Hammamet and Sharm El Sheikh on Wednesday.
