Karin Knapp starts her second career

Knapp remains in the tennis world In May of this year, Karin Knapp sadly announced the end of her career. The 31-year-old is by no means lazy, but is taking a new path in her career. Knapp remains loyal to tennis and, like her husband Francesco Piccari, now trains Italy's tennis talents. Verena Hofer takes Knapp under her wing At the beginning of July, Verena Hofer from Val Gardena completed a week of training in Anzio, at Francesco and brother Alessandro Piccari's Piccari Academy. There she met Knapp. The soon-to-be 21-year-old Hofer was immediately enthusiastic about the former number 33 in the world rankings. The youngster hopes to climb up the world rankings under the leadership of the experienced Knapp. “The collaboration is initially planned until the end of the year,” says Ambros Hofer, Verena’s father and tournament director at the ATP Challenger in October in Val Gardena. Until now, Hofer was looked after by Stefano Bassetto.

Good start to the first tournament together This week Knapp is coaching Hofer at a tournament for the first time. The woman from Val Gardena is number 15.000 at the $4 tournament in Sezze. On Tuesday in the first round she won over the Spanish qualifier Julia Payola 1:6 and 2:7 (6). Knapp was satisfied with her protégé's first game: "She played quite well and, above all, correctly for the first match."

Knapp, who also began training in Anzio near Rome after her comeback in 2009, sees great potential in Hofer: “She can improve a lot of things, that’s a good thing. Also in the physical area.”

In addition to Hofer, numerous other top athletes, such as Deborah Chiesa (number 159 in the world) and Ludmilla Samsonova (WTA 336), train in Anzio.
