Sparkasse Trophy: 3 South Tyroleans clear the first hurdle

The bone mill qualification began on Saturday for 7 South Tyroleans. The local duel between Jacob Nicolussi and Manuel Bernard in particular developed into a real crime thriller. The Welschnofner, who has been playing for a college team in the US state of Virginia for the last few years, started strongly against Bernard and clearly won the first set 6:1. The second belonged to the Rungger, who now found his way into the game much better. In the third set the game developed into a real thriller. Nicolussi fended off match points at 4:5 and then again in the tiebreak and narrowly won 9:7 in the tiebreak. On Sunday Nicolussi will face neo-Rungger Joy Vigani, number 9 in the qualification.

Duel of the best of the year Sebastian Brzesinski, Vigani's club colleague at TC Rungg, is also in the second qualifying round. He beat Paolo Bompieri in 3 sets - much to the delight of the South Tyrolean tennis fans, who can experience a real hit on Sunday. In the duel between the (still) 16-year-olds, Brzesinski meets Jannik Sinner (ATP 1164) from Sesto. The classmates (2001) are considered two of the biggest South Tyrolean tennis hopes. Brixen's Pietro Fellin, who was able to hold his own against Alessandro Conca in two sets, also progressed without much trouble. However, Thomas Thaler, Nicoló Toffanin and Tobias Kirchlechner (all TC Rungg) are no longer in the running for one of the 2 places in the main field.

All three victorious South Tyroleans will continue in the second round of qualification on Sunday. A total of 3 games with South Tyrolean participation are on the program. Tomorrow, the number 2 qualifier for the “Sparkassen Trophy” will be for the first time, with the Brazilian champion Wilson Leite (ATP 7).
