Sparkasse Trophy: Day of the favorites in Rungg

The tournament started on Thursday with number 7 Juan Pablo Ficovich (ATP 431) and the unseeded Brazilian Joao Pedro Sorgi (ATP 618). Ficovich, who has already won two Futures titles this year, continued his previous performances during the tournament and remained without losing a set in the third match in Rungg with a score of 6:3, 6:4. The 24-year-old Italian Pietro Rondoni (ATP 426) also kept a clean slate, as he did not come into serious trouble at any stage of the game in his quarter-final against compatriot Davide Galoppini (ATP 535). After an hour and 41 minutes he made it 6:3 and 6:2.

The third semi-finalist was determined in the match between the Argentinian Gonzalo Villanueva (ATP 628) and the 8th seeded Frenchman Fabien Reboul (ATP 383). In the opening set, a break in the first game was enough for Reboul to win the set later. In the second, Villanueva's serving performance continued to decline. She ultimately made the decisive difference in Reboul's 6:4, 6:2 match win.

At “prime time” on Center Court, tournament favorite Joao Souza finally met the German Elmar Ejupovic (ATP 396). Souza put on a really strong performance. With his own service he was as safe as a bank and as a highly efficient receiver (1 break per set) he used the match point to make it 6:3, 6:4 after 1 hour and 38 minutes.

Semifinals in singles, final in doubles The semi-finals between Reboul and Ficovich (12 p.m.) and Souza and Rondoni (14 p.m.) are on the program in Rungg on Friday. The double final between Marco Bortolotti/Alexander Weis and Andrea Guerrieri/Corrado Summaria will take place at 11 a.m. With the Weis/Bortolotti pairing, two TC Rungg players are in the final of the doubles competition for the first time.
