Novak Djokovic didn't know what was happening to him. He, who had won the last 25 matches at Wimbledon, was on Center Court against Sinner, who was inexperienced on grass trailing by 0:2 sets. But the Serb wasn't just behind, no. He was partly dominated by the unleashed South Tyrolean. A circumstance that the 20-time Grand Slam winner is not used to. “Jannik was the better player for two sets,” admitted the Djoker in the on-court interview. “I went out, freshened up and gave a motivational speech in the mirror. That is sometimes necessary when no positive things happen on the pitch.” This allowed him to recollect his thoughts and prepare for Sinner in the best possible way.

And the man from Belgrade actually appeared transformed afterwards. He broke Sinner right at the beginning of the third set and from then on had the scepter firmly in his hand. “The toilet break was the turning point,” revealed Djokovic with a little wink. Sinner agrees Sinner also sees the beginning of the third set as a sticking point: “When I was 0:15 behind in the second service game, I hit a simple forehand into the net. After that, Novak played a good point. Instead of 15:30 p.m. the score was 0:40. He broke me shortly afterwards and played better from that point on," said the Sexton player, who couldn't manage a break after that.

Sinner does not accept that foot pain plagued him from the end of the fourth sentence. “I twisted my ankle when I fell. When I initially felt pain, I was a bit scared. But when I took the first steps, I had the feeling that it was okay. I was a bit cautious about the first two points, but after that everything was ok. The most important thing is that my body feels good now,” said the injury-plagued South Tyrolean, who was disappointed but also proud at the same time. Next stop: Hamburg “What I did here at Wimbledon will hopefully give me a lot of confidence for the rest of the season. I can be proud of it,” emphasizes the Sesto native. “I improved from match to match and learned a lot on this playing surface. That will help me in the coming years here at Wimbledon and was the reason why I decided to play on grass in the first place." He showed that he could cut a good figure and will arrive next year with more confidence - and hopefully come even further.

Now he's switching off for a few days before his season continues with the traditional ATP 500 clay court tournament in Hamburg (July 16th to 24th).
