Tennis South Tyrol is looking to Wolkenstein

Val Gardena is hosting an ITF men's tournament for the third time, with prize money of $15.000. In 2018 and 2019 the game was played on the clay courts in St. Christina, this year for the first time in the hall in Wolkenstein. The entry list is headed by number 429 in the world, 28-year-old German Elmar Ejupovic. The tournament was presented on Thursday at the Hotel Freina in Wolkenstein by club president Ingo Mair and tournament director Wolfgang Wanker. Also present were tennis country head Richard Weißensteiner, the vice president of the national association, Roland Sandrin, the deputy mayor of Wolkenstein, Ivo Insam, and CONI country president Alex Tabarelli. Last year the tournament could not be held in Val Gardena due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but in 2018 and 2019 the tournament was a success. The South Tyrolean tennis players were particularly impressive at the premiere in St. Christina. A total of 13 local players took part, Joy Vigani from Brixen reached the quarter-finals (he failed because of Jannik Sinner), Alexander Weis from Bozen reached the semi-finals and Sinner reached the final. The Sesto native, who was number 1161 in the world in Val Gardena (now number 13) and played his first ITF final in his career there, had to admit defeat to the German Peter Heller 1:6, 3:6. In 2019, however, the Argentine Facundo Diaz Acosta defeated the Brazilian Wilson Leite in three sets. Wild card to Val Gardena duo As expected, the organizers' wild cards for the main field went to the two home team, Patric Prinoth from St. Christina and Erwin Tröbinger from Wolkenstein. Three other South Tyroleans, Gabriel Moroder from Val Gardena, Niccolò Toffanin from Leifers and Christian Fellin from Brixen, also qualified thanks to a wild card. The qualifying games are on the program on Sunday and Monday, and the main draw begins on Tuesday. The final is scheduled for Saturday, October 30th at 11:00 a.m. Admission to the Wolkenstein tennis hall is only possible with the Green Pass.

After the state capital Bolzano, Wolkenstein will also be hosting an ITF tournament for men from Sunday, October 24th, which was presented on Thursday.
