Tennis festival ends successful season

Tennis state president Richard Weißensteiner was able to welcome around 150 guests to the Wolkenstein tennis hall, including sports state councilor Martha Stocker, the mayor of Wolkenstein Roland Demetz, the deputy mayors and sports representatives of Wolkenstein and St. Ulrich, Ivo Insam and Ivan Senoner, the Wolkenstein speaker for Social services, family and youth, Christine Senoner, CONI President Heinz Gutweniger, Gerhard Vanzo from the Südtiroler Sporthilfe, the Val Gardena VSS speaker Oskar Insam and Mauro De Nardin from the Raiffeisenkasse.

In his speech, Weißensteiner looked back on a very successful season. In addition to the two tennis stars Andreas Seppi (ATP 94) and Karin Knapp (WTA 966), who unfortunately had to take a break for almost the entire season due to injury, eight other South Tyroleans have now made it into the world rankings: Verena Hofer (WTA 793) and Verena Meliss (WTA 1084) for women, Joy Vigani (ATP 974), Alexander Weis (ATP 1110), Horst Rieder (ATP 1513), Georg Winkler (ATP 1904), Manfred Fellin (ATP 1959) and Moritz Trocker (ATP 1959) for men .

In total, the South Tyrolean Tennis Association has 5059 registered members in 84 clubs. 403 teams took part in the various championships this year and played over 1200 matches. Weißensteiner is proud of the four international tournaments that are held in South Tyrol: the ATP Challenger in Ortisei, the two $25.000 ITF Futures in Bolzano and Rungg and the women's ITF tournament in Ortisei.

Cornelia Gartner and Josef Peer were honored

A special award was given in Wolkenstein to Cornelia Gartner and Josef Peer, who, after many years of service, resigned from the board of the state committee and those responsible for the referees. Loretta Andreasi replaces Peer.

All 2017 national champions were then honored. This year's tennis festival was organized by the TC St. Christina-Wolkenstein with various music, ballet and theater performances. Afterwards there was dinner for everyone. “I can only thank the tennis club, a really successful evening,” said President Weißensteiner, praising the organizers.

Tennis festival ends successful season

The South Tyrolean season officially ended with the traditional tennis festival in Wolkenstein. All individual and team national champions in 2017 received awards.
