Tennis legend Laver wants to suspend Kyrgios

“Everything they tried didn’t work. A suspension would be the only answer,” the 81-year-old told Australian newspapers Sydney Morning Herald and The Age in an interview during the last Grand Slam of the year in New York.

The ATP started an investigation against Kyrgios after his most recent verbal attack. The world number 30. had described the ATP as “pretty corrupt” after his first-round victory at the US Open against the American Steve Johnson. The professional association did not give a time frame for a decision on a possible penalty.

Kyrgios destroyed two of his rackets in the catacombs during the second-round match against Russia's Karen Khachanov after Irish chair umpire Fergus Murphy denied him a toilet break due to lack of time. He also spat in the direction of the referee.

“I'm not sure if he learned anything from all the things that happened,” said eleven-time Grand Slam winner Laver: “He could have become a great champion or could become one because of his serving qualities . But his brain is getting in the way. He doesn’t want to follow the rules or the referees.”
