Thiem: “A bit of a tricky injury”

I have to make sure that I let it heal properly,” said Thiem and added: “If I pay attention in the splint for five weeks and really don’t do anything, then it should be done.” The injury is a very common one in tennis. “I'm far from the first person to have this. If you pay attention, there shouldn’t be anything at all as a result.” Thiem does not want to speak of a “plague year”. Despite a botched season so far, Thiem didn't want to talk about an “epidemic year”. “I can’t really agree with that. Of course, the results were really bad for my standards and a lot of things didn't fit. But I've also been very lucky in the last few years and have had a lot of incredible matches and tournaments." No athlete can get through his career without injuries. “Fortunately, it took me a long time to get to the first rough one.” He has to be patient, but it's not that difficult for him. “Because I have the splint and the injury is well documented among tennis players, I was told exactly what I had to do. That made things easier.” He is not tormented by doubts about his comeback, even if he misses some tournaments. “It won't be easy to come back. My goal is simply to be in top shape after five weeks and then be able to easily start playing tennis again. I can play tennis so well that I can come back.” In principle, Thiem is now covered with therapies. “I have to keep flying to Barcelona and just subordinate everything to regeneration.” In Barcelona, doctor Angel Ruiz Cotorro, who also looks after Rafael Nadal, and his team are monitoring the healing process. The 17-time tournament winner wants to do nice things that he otherwise doesn't have time for. “Next week maybe be back at Formula 1 and do everything for the comeback.” He hopes that he will also have “a little bit of time” with his girlfriend Lilli Paul-Roncalli.
