Wawrinka shortened it again to 3:4, but the world number 131 from Sexten didn't let anything go. After exactly two hours of play, Sinner won his first set in the main draw at a Grand Slam tournament 6:4.

In the fourth set, Wawrinka increased to 2-0 with a break. But Sinner had another answer ready and equalized to 2-2. In the seventh game, the South Tyrolean missed two break points to make it 4:3, while in the following game he had to take the break to make it 3:5. Sinner then missed two more break chances before Wawrinka was able to hold on 2-49 after 6:4 hours of play.
