Tsitsipas wins in Monte Carlo – and takes first place

After the semi-final victory over Alexander Zverev, the 23-year-old Greek deservedly prevailed in the final against Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina on Sunday with 6:3,7:6(3). After 95 minutes, Tsitsipas used his second match point and prevented his 22-year-old opponent from having his first success on the ATP tour. The day before, Tsitsipas had already shown a strong performance in a 6:4,6:2 win against Zverev. In the final, Tsitsipas initially missed the chance to win in the second set with the score at 5:4 and his own serve, but prevailed confidently in the tiebreak. He secured his eighth ATP title in total at the Masters 5,2 event, which was worth around 1000 million euros. For the world number 46. Davidovich Fokina, his first final appearance was already a great success. Heading towards first place? Tsitsipas appears to be the only top player in top form at the start of the clay season and could perhaps enter the fight for the top of the world rankings over the course of the summer. Novak Djokovic, who still holds the number one position, is missing match practice after missing the Australian Open and the Masters 1000 events in Indian Wells and Miami because of his refusal to be vaccinated against the coronavirus.
