Tsitsipas' final stop: No Sinner party in Rome

This was the 5th meeting between Sinner (ATP 13) and number 5 in the world rankings - and the 3rd in Rome. For the fourth time in total, Tsitsipas left the pitch as the winner. At around 4 degrees Celsius, the 30-year-old Greek won in two sets with 23:7(6) and 5:6. This is also because Sinner was no longer able to keep up in the second round due to physical problems.

But first things first: The first sentence didn't start well for Sinner. The South Tyrolean had to give up his first serve game. But Sinner didn't let that upset him, fought back and equalized to 3-3. From now on the first round was very even. Both players were extremely dependent on their first serve. If they didn't get this into the field, the point usually went to the opponent.

The level then got better as time went on. But Sinner kept walking between light and shadow. Between impressive shots and rather careless mistakes, everything was there. Ultimately, the first round went to a tie-break. Tsitsipas held his nerve on the big points, while Sinner made a double fault. This is also why the Greek narrowly won the tie-break 7:5. Sinner is tormented Before the second set, Sinner took a medical time-out. The man from Sexten had his left hip treated. Apparently Sinner's thigh also hurt. Sinner noticed this in the second round. The 20-year-old no longer seemed mobile and kept communicating with his trainer Simone Vagnozzi.

The spectators in the sold-out Center Court repeatedly tried to cheer Sinner up with “Jannik” chants. But the Pusterer was no longer running smoothly and could no longer keep up with his opponent's pace. Although Sinner tried to get the most out of himself again, Tsitsipas made short work of it in the second round and converted his second match point after 2:20 hours. A moment of shock Before Tsitsipas' second match point, the game was interrupted for around 15 minutes. A spectator in the stands collapsed due to the extreme heat. The paramedics then looked after him. Because the referee initially wanted to let the game continue, there were loud whistles in the Campo Centrale. It is not yet clear what the spectator's condition is.

Tsitsipas will now face Alexander Zverev (ATP 3) in the semi-finals on Saturday. The German had previously clearly defeated the Chilean Christian Garin in two sets. In the other quarter-final games, Denis Shapovalov and Casper Ruud and Novak Djokovic and Felix Auger-Aliassime will face each other on Friday.

Jannik Sinner was the only tennis player from Italy who made it to the quarterfinals at the Masters 1000 tournament in Rome. But on Friday it was also the end of the line for the youngster from Pusteria: Sinner had to admit defeat to Stefanos Tsitsipas.
