Tournament victory! Jannik Sinner plays big in Sofia

The fourth tournament victory on the ATP tour is in the bag! In addition to his two successes in Melbourne and Washington this year, Jannik Sinner won the ATP 2020 tournament in Sofia this Sunday for the second time after 250. In the eagerly awaited final between the two best players in the competition, Sinner defeated the French veteran Gaël Monfils 6:3 and 6:4. The final lasted just 79 minutes.

Until this Sunday, Sinner hadn't had to play anywhere near his best tennis in Bulgaria's capital. The 20-year-old made it to the final without any shine and yet without losing a set. There, however, he put on the really big show. With precise strokes, a sensationally strong first serve and an unusually variable game, he didn't give a long-standing world-class player like Monfils the slightest chance. The difference between the finalists that day was worlds greater than the six positions between the two in the world rankings would suggest. Sinner is in 14th place there, the Frenchman in 20th place.

Especially in the starting phase, the South Tyrolean surprised his counterpart with aggressive, error-free play. Sinner took the first serve from Monfils and was already 3-0 in the lead after a very short time. After just 40 minutes the first set was wrapped up.

The second round was more balanced, but Sinner once again set the course in the right direction early with a break. Monfils was now arguing with the referee and himself, but on the field he was never really able to deliver the spectacle that was so characteristic of him. This was also due to the fact that Sinner had no weak phases and confidently maintained his lead thanks to his break at the start of the set. When the score was 5:4 and 40:0, the youngster scored his first match point. 41.145 euros in prize money and 250 ATP points “I am very happy to have won here again, Sofia has long been a very special place for me,” explained Sinner in the winner’s interview afterwards. This was his third win in his fourth duel with Monfils. But what's even more important is that with his fourth tournament victory of his career, the exceptional talent has added another highlight to his young career.

In addition to 41.145 euros in prize money, Sinner can also look forward to 250 ATP points in Sofia. With these, he remains among the top ten players of 2021, which significantly boosts his hopes of taking part in the ATP Finals in November in Turin.
