The Olympic Games are the biggest thing there is in the career of (almost) every athlete. Almost, because in tennis the competitions under the sign of the five rings are not as important as in other sports. And yet: If you look at the list of winners of the sport, which has been an Olympic sport again since 1988, you will come across many big names - such as Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal and Andre Agassi. In contrast to the Grand Slams, there are neither world ranking points nor big money to be won at the Summer Games. Rather, the appeal of representing one's own country is stimulating and attractive. But this year everything is different: The corona pandemic still has the world firmly in its grip - and with it the Olympic Games. The regulations are strict and the usual Olympic flair is hardly present. And what's more, if you look at Sinner's perspective, the games take place on the other side of the world. A trade-off Do you take the long journey, the quarantine and everything that goes with it, maybe to return home after a match? Many athletes have answered this question with a yes. Others, however, said no - including the young Sesto native. In Sinner's case, however, it wasn't the strict rules or low status that played a role. He explained his cancellation with his performance during the last tournaments and that he wanted to concentrate on his development as a tennis player. This decision made waves in Italy. Wise decision, said many journalists, tennis experts - and fans. Just as many thought that Sinner couldn't have missed this opportunity, especially since the game was played on his preferred surface, the hard court. Regardless of whether the rejection is right or wrong, Sinner has shown courage with his decision. Only the summer will show whether it has paid off and whether he can find his way back to his best.
