US Open: Andreas Seppi clears the first hurdle

Andreas Seppi has played every Grand Slam tournament since the French Open in 2005. Today in New York he played his 46th major tournament in a row, the 47th in his career. Of the active players, only six have a longer streak: the Spaniards Feliciano Lopez (59), Fernando Verdasco (54), David Ferrer (51) and Guillermo Garcia Lopez (48) as well as the world number one Novak Djokovic (48) and the Swiss Stan Wawrinka (47).

Seppi gets off to a good start After the second round exit at Wimbledon, Seppi only won one of five matches, the opening game of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro against Ilja Martschenko. However, there were no ATP points for this. Today he got off to a good start against the 36-year-old Frenchman Robert and took a 4-1 lead with two breaks in the first set. After half an hour he used his third set ball to make it 6:2. In the second half of the game, Robert had to fend off two break points, but then took serve from Kalterer in the sixth game to make it 4:2. The Frenchman then left no stone unturned and won the second set with 6:3 points. However, Seppi countered immediately and took a 2-0 lead with a break in the third set. Robert managed the rebreak immediately, but when the score was 5:4, Seppi took his serve again and secured the set with 6:4 points. Seppi also pulled away to 3-1 in the fourth period. He then controlled the game and used his second match point after 2:23 hours to make the final score 6:3. The Kalterer keeps his clean slate against Robert: He celebrated his third victory in the third direct duel today.

Seppi remains in the top 100 With this success, Seppi will remain in the top 100 in the world rankings even after the US Open. Today the Kaltererer appears in 87th place. In the second round, a big challenge awaited Seppi in the form of Rafael Nadal, fifth in the world rankings. The Spaniard clearly defeated the Uzbek Denis Istomin 6:1, 6:4, 6:2 in the first round.
