US Open draw: Sinner celebrates, Seppi doesn't

Jannik Sinner was not unlucky when it came to the draws in his young career - quite the opposite. The Sesto native, seeded number 13, should be all the happier when he looks at the tableau for this year's US Open. In the first round, Sinner will face Max Purcell from Australia. The 23-year-old is number 205 in the world, a doubles specialist and is at the US Open because the organizers gave him a wildcard. And he only got this because of an agreement between the Australian and US Opens, which have been “exchanging” wild cards for US and Australian tennis aces for years. Purcell has only played ten matches on the ATP tour in his career, one of them against Sinner. In 2020, the two right-handers faced each other at the Australian Open. Sinner won easily 7:6, 6:2 and 6:4. The name Purcell brings back good memories - also because it was Sinner's first victory in a Grand Slam tournament. Should the 20-year-old win his opening match, either the Italian clay court specialist Marco Cecchinato (ATP 90) or the 18-year-old Zachary Svajda (ATP 713) from the United States would wait in the second round. Names that don't upset Sinner. The first big chunk would be facing Sinner in the fourth round. His name: Olympic champion Alexander Zverev. An unpleasant opponent for Seppi Andreas Seppi will not face any seeded players in the first round, but he will face an extremely unpleasant opponent in Marton Fucsovics. The Kalterer (ATP 88) and the Hungarian (ATP 42) have faced each other three times so far, and Fucsovics was able to prevail twice. But Seppi celebrated a much nicer success: In January 2018, the 37-year-old beat his opponent, who was eight years his junior, in the Challenger final in Canberra and thus took the crown. Nevertheless, Fucsovics, who has already won twice at Grand Slam tournaments against Jannik Sinner, goes into the game as the favorite - also because he made it to the quarter-finals at the last major tournament in Wimbledon and only there against Novak Djokovic drew the short straw. The US Open begins next week. It is not yet clear when exactly Sinner and Seppi will be in action.
