Verena Hofer is in the doubles final

The “Azzurre” prevailed in the semifinals against the Japanese Funa and Mio Kozaki after 1:57 hours of play in the super tiebreak with 6:7(6), 7:6(1), 10:4.

For the 21-year-old from Val Gardena, it was her 14th doubles semi-final on the ITF tour. Hofer has now reached the final for the eighth time, where she has a record of 4:3 wins. Hofer lost her last final, at the home tournament in St. Ulrich in mid-December, with the Swiss Simona Waltert. On Saturday, Hofer/Lavino will fight for the doubles title against number 3 seeds Angela Fita Boluda (ESP)/Gabriela Horackova (CZE).

The first set was very even today. Hofer/Lavino promptly moved ahead to 4:2, but the Japanese countered with the rebreak to make it 4:4. Both duos took the service twice again until the score was 6:6. In the tiebreak, the “Azzurre” even lost a set point at 6:5, after 52 minutes Funa and Mio Kozaki were able to hold their own with 8:6.

In the second period, Hofer/Lavino took the lead 5-1. The Italians slowed down a gear and were punished for it: Funa/Mio Kozaki secured four games in a row to equalize 5:5. Bitter: The “Azzurre” missed a set point in both 5:2 and 5:3. A little later, this set also had to be decided in a tiebreak: This time Hofer/Lavino clearly had the better end with 7:1. In the decisive super tiebreak, the Italians remained dominant and won 10:4.
