Verena Meliss causes a huge surprise in Grado

Verena Meliss is about to make it into the main draw at the $25.000 tournament in Grado. The 18-year-old from Kaltern, who was only allowed to start in the qualification thanks to a wild card from the organizers, caused a huge surprise on Saturday when she defeated the German Tamara Korpatsch, number 2 on the seed list, in the first round after 54:6 hours of play and 319 in the world, knocked out of the competition with 7:5, 2:6, 7:6(5).
