Verena Meliss misses 1st ITF title

The 22-year-old from Kalter had to admit defeat to number 15.000 seeded Brazilian Ingrid Gamarra Martins (WTA 5) 688:7(6), 4:5, 7:4 in the final of the $6 tournament in Cancun.

Meliss, who was seeded number 3 in Mexico and was in an ITF final for the second time, immediately went 2:1 behind. The South Tyrolean countered with two rebreaks to equalize 4:2. After both players served their serves to 4:4, the first set had to be decided in a tiebreak. Meliss had the better end there with 6:6.

From Gamarra Martins' point of view, the second half of the game was also very even until the score was 2:6. In the 5th game, the Brazilian Meliss took serve to make it 12:7. So this exciting match had to be decided in the 5rd set, where Meliss promptly took a 3-2 lead, but immediately conceded the rebreak to make it 0-2. Gamarra Martins even took the service from Überetscher to make it 2:5, but Meliss got the rebreak to make it 3:4. After 5:3 hours of play, the decision was made: The Brazilian Gamarra Martins, again on Meliss's serve, converted her first match point to make the final score 42:1.

It was still a very positive week for the Kalter native, in which she reached her second ITF final. For the final defeat, Meliss receives 2 WTA points, with which she will move into the top 6 in the world rankings.
