Four hours of farewell: Murray's last fight in Melbourne

Despite his obvious hip problems, the two-time Olympic champion fought against the Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut for 4:10 hours before winning 4:6, 4:6, 7:6 (7:5), 7:6 (7:4), had to admit defeat 2:6.

“I thought it would be easier for me,” said Murray in a shaky voice: “This is a fantastic place to play tennis. I gave it my all today. It was my last match at the Australian Open - and it was a great match." After the last point, the organizers played a farewell video in which many of his long-time companions such as Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic had their say.

Murray received a standing ovation after spectacular points in the Melbourne Arena, the facility's second largest court. Mother Judy had tears in her eyes. Already after the press conference on Friday, a wave of sympathy had swept over Murray; almost the entire tennis world had expressed their regrets and left their best wishes.

Against Bautista Agut, number 22 on the seed list and winner of the preparatory tournament in Doha, Murray fought like he did at the best times of his career. Despite his limited footwork, he kept the game surprisingly open and once again demonstrated why he was one of the “Big Four” in the era of perennial winners Federer, Nadal and Djokovic.
