World class: Sinner creates magic in Paris

Jannik Sinner and David Goffin received a special honor on Sunday morning. They were able to inaugurate the newly built roof on the Court Philippe-Chatrier, the largest stadium on the facility in Paris, in front of the 1.000 admitted spectators and at the same time open the third Grand Slam tournament of the year. For the 18-year-old South Tyrolean, it was his first appearance on one of the largest tennis courts in the world. But Sinner didn't need any time to get used to it, as he had been there in the days before the match Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic trained in the same place and be able to adapt to the special circumstances. The sessions with the stars of the scene bore fruit – Sinner deservedly won 7:5, 6:0 and 6:3. Big fight at the beginning In the first set, both players had great difficulty getting their serves through. The reason for this was, among other things, the new balls that will be used at this year's French Open and are significantly slower than those from last year. Coupled with the cold external conditions, the serve became less effective - five breaks were the result. The Sesto player achieved the deciding factor when the score was 6:5. With a few unforced errors and powerful groundstrokes, he deservedly won the first round 7:5.

While winning the set really inspired Sinner, who was playing almost perfectly, the world number 12 fell short. As the game progresses, you get into greater difficulty. The Belgian simply couldn't find any means against the South Tyrolean and made mistakes after mistakes in an attempt to play more aggressively. A class difference, which was also reflected on the scoreboard, became noticeable. The second set went 6-0 to the South Tyrolean, who, like in the first round of the US Open, led by two rounds. Sinner shows no nerves Back then, Sinner's strength left him - not this time. The youngster outplayed the former top 10 player, whom he had already defeated in Rotterdam at the beginning of the year. In the meantime he won 11 (!) games in a row. While Sinner succeeded in everything and brought his opponent to the brink of despair with spectacular punches, Goffin resigned: there was no match against Sinner today. After almost two hours, the shooting star used his second match point and won his first victory in his first participation in the French Open.

In the second round, Sinner is waiting for Benjamin Bonzi from France, who surprisingly eliminated the Finn Emil Ruusuvuori.

For the second South Tyrolean, veteran Andreas Seppi, the French Open ended prematurely. He was eliminated in round one on Sunday ( SportNews berichtete ).
