Wild cards awarded in Val Gardena

The organizers' only wild card goes to Thanasi Kokkinakis from Australia. The 21-year-old is one of the biggest young hopes on the ATP World Tour. At the age of 19, he was already ranked 2015th in the world in 69 and is currently ranked 212th. Kokkinakis is repeatedly set back by injuries, but when he can play, he is also a threat to the best players in the world. This year, Kokkinakis has played seven tournaments (including three Grand Slams) and reached the final of the ATP tournament in Los Cabos, Mexico.

The Italian Tennis Association can award three of the four wild cards. The FIT has awarded its invitations to the tournament in South Tyrol to Alessandro Giannessi, Lorenzo Sonego and Matteo Donati. All three have already played in Val Gardena. Giannessi even made it to the final in St. Ulrich a year ago and only lost to Stefano Napolitano 4:6, 1:6. Giannessi is currently ranked 130th in the world. Lorenzo Sonego (ATP ranking 435) also feels comfortable on the fast ground in Val Gardena. He played in the quarter-finals here in 2015 and was even in the semi-finals last year, which he lost to Giannessi 4:6 in the third set after a tough fight. Matteo Donati, like Sonego, born in 1995, is currently number 346 in the world. In his only participation in Val Gardena, he lost in the first round against Andreas Seppi in 2014. Seppi will be at the start in Ortisei this year for the fourth time and for the first time in three years. He reached the final of his home tournament three times and won in 2013 and 2014.

Only if Giannessi gets a place in the qualification for the Masters tournament in Shanghai (which will be decided on Friday) will the third wild card from the Italian association go to Federico Gaio. The world number 279 was also in the quarter-finals in St. Ulrich last year.

Speaking of qualification: It begins at the Challenger in Val Gardena on Saturday, October 7th. “We will give all of our wild cards in qualification to South Tyrolean players,” promises tournament director Ambros Hofer. The qualifying draw will take place on Friday, October 6th at 21 p.m. under the supervision of ATP supervisor Carmelo Di Dio.

Wild cards awarded in Val Gardena

The four wild cards for the main draw at the Sparkasse ATP Challenger Val Gadena South Tyrol were awarded on Wednesday. The most important tennis tournament in South Tyrol has prize money of 64.000 euros and is taking place for the eighth time from October 7th to 15th.
