Williams outclasses opponent on comeback in Melbourne

Two years after the American won her 23rd and last Grand Slam title while pregnant in Melbourne, she outclassed the German Fed Cup player Tatjana Maria (Bad Saulgau) on her return to the Rod Laver Arena 6:0, 6:2.

Williams appeared in a skin-tight green one-piece for the duel of the young mothers who live in the immediate vicinity in Palm Beach, Florida. “Our daughters play together,” Williams revealed after the match. She has always been the talk of the town with her outfits throughout her career, most recently last year with a black catsuit at the French Open in Paris. Maria (31) had no chance against Williams' power in her classic tennis dress and was completely overwhelmed in the first set. Only 13 percent of her first serves landed in the field, and Maria only scored 5 out of 29 points. Things got better in the second round, but the unequal duel ended after only 49 minutes. Maria left the place in tears.

Before Maria, Julia Görges (Bad Oldesloe/No. 14) and Andrea Petkovic (Darmstadt) were eliminated in the first round on Monday, only Angelique Kerber (Kiel), second in the world rankings, won her opening match. A total of six German players qualified for the main draw of the first major of the season.

After her final defeats in 2018 at Wimbledon (against Kerber) and at the US Open in New York (against Naomi Osaka), Williams finally wants to take advantage of the next chance for her 24th Grand Slam title, with which she will be in the “eternal” best list Record holder Margaret Court would catch up. The triumph in Melbourne would be the crowning achievement of her comeback after the birth of her daughter Olympia in September 2017.
