Zverev after beating Medvedev in the semifinals

The 22-year-old prevailed in his final preliminary round game against the Russian Daniil Medvedev 6:4, 7:6 (7:4) and thus pushed Rafael Nadal out of second place in the table of the Andre Agassi group. In the semi-finals, Zverev will face Austrian Dominic Thiem on Saturday (21 p.m.).

Zverev defeated world number one Nadal in two sets in his opening match on Monday, but then clearly lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas (Greece). After Nadal had beaten Tsitsipas, who had already qualified for the semi-finals, 2:51 (6:7), 4:7, 6:4 in a thriller that lasted 7:5 hours in the afternoon, Zverev urgently needed a win against Medvedev, who had already been eliminated.

Zverev had previously won four of five duels against Medvedev, but suffered a defeat in the last encounter in the final of the Masters in Shanghai in mid-October. A break at the start gave the German an early lead this time. Last year's winner served as strong as usual, hardly got involved in open rallies and won the first set after just 34 minutes.

A similar picture emerged in the second round. Zverev didn't allow much on his own serve, ultimately not allowing his opponent a single break chance and waiting patiently for his opportunities. This ultimately only came up in the tiebreak, where Zverev then struck ice cold and ended the match with an ace after 1:18 hours.
