Zverev complains and wins, Sinner falls by the wayside

For the second time in his career, Jannik Sinner reached the semi-finals of an ATP tournament on Saturday. But it wasn't enough for the final: against the world number 2. The young South Tyrolean had to admit defeat to Zverev 7:6 (7), 3:3. Nevertheless, Sinner played a strong tournament and collected a total of 6 world ranking points. He will appear in the ATP rankings from Monday at position 90 - so things continue to rise steeply.

Against Zverev, the first set was particularly hard-fought and balanced, but the German was better in the second round. However, Zverev once again showed off his eccentric character. He repeatedly complained about balls that were given out but in his opinion were still good, and once he threw his bat to the ground in a rage. In the second sentence, this behavior also upset the otherwise calm and level-headed Sinner, which is why the two had a brief verbal battle. In the end, Zverev praised the young Sinner. “He will soon be in the top 1,” predicted the tennis star.

By the way, Zverev succeeded in getting his revenge: just a few weeks ago, Sinner prevailed against the German in the round of 1 of the French Open and caused a small sensation. Now, thanks to his victory, Zverev moves into the final in Cologne, where he will face Diego Schwartzman. By the way, Zverev already won the first tournament in Cologne last week. Sinner gets off to a dream start Both players started the game slightly ailing: Zverev was recently struggling with hip problems, while Sinner had a slight cold. Nevertheless, the young South Tyrolean got off to a better start in the match. While he was confident in his own service and didn't let anything go wrong, he repeatedly caused problems for Zverev when he served. It was therefore not surprising that the man from Sexten took advantage of his fourth break chance in the fourth game, made it 4:4 and then even moved ahead to 3:1.

But then Sinner slowly began to feel a little lazy - probably also because Friday's marathon match against Gilles Simon left its mark. Sinner made some slight mistakes that Zverev took advantage of and got back into the game. The German caught up point by point and was suddenly ahead 5:4. As has often been the case these days, Sinner found it particularly difficult to serve on his own serve; he allowed a total of three breaks in the first set. On the other hand, he got just as many serves from his opponent, so the set had to be decided in a tie-break. And here Zverev had the better end for himself.

In the second round the German really got going, immediately took serve from Sinner and moved away to 2:4. Game 1, which lasted over 7 minutes and which Zverev was ultimately able to win on his own serve, turned out to be decisive - 10:5. The decision, because a little later Sinner's opponent converted his first match point to make it 2:1.
