World Team Cup: Table tennis men lose to South Korea

London (SID) The German table tennis men reached the knockout round of the World Team Cup, but most likely missed out on winning the group and thus a good starting position for the quarter-finals. After the opening 3-0 win over outsiders Australia, the European champions lost 2-3 to South Korea, third in the World Cup, in London. The two victories of world number one Dimitrij Ovtcharov (Hameln/Orenburg) were not enough for the DTTB selection to win. Since South Korea is likely to secure group victory against Australia on Friday, Germany expects a duel with a winner of the other groups in the round of the top eight. This means that even serial winner China could wait for national coach Jörg Roßkopf's team, which will have to do without record European champion Timo Boll in London. The world number three from Düsseldorf is missing due to a scheduled break from competition. World Cup winner Ovtcharov and Patrick Franziska from Saarbrücken scored the individual points for the DTTB men against Australia. Franziska and top 20 player Ruwen Filus (Fulda) had previously ensured the favorites took the lead in the opening doubles. Franziska and Benedikt Duda (Bergneustadt) lost to South Korea in the singles and together in the doubles. The women of the German Table Tennis Association (DTTB) did not qualify for London.
