Without Ovtcharov: table tennis men have no chance against China

London (SID) Without the ailing world number one Dimitrij Ovtcharov (Hameln/Orenburg), the German table tennis men failed in the quarterfinals against the favorites China at the World Team Cup in London. The team of national coach Jörg Roßkopf lost 0-3 to the team from the Middle Kingdom with its superstars. Patrick Franziska (Saarbrücken), Benedikt Duda (Bergneustadt) and Ruwen Filus (Fulda) failed to win a set against the Chinese team led by Olympic champion Ma Long and double world champion Fan Zhendong. Ovtcharov had already struggled with back problems in the 3-0 opening win against Australia. After the 2-3 defeat against Olympic fourth-placed South Korea, Germany missed out on winning its group and drew the toughest quarter-final draw with China. The women of the German Table Tennis Association (DTTB) did not qualify for London.
