Sixth Europe Top 16 victory: Boll spoils Ovtcharov's number one debut

Montreux (SID) Record European champion Timo Boll (Düsseldorf) spoiled Dimitrij Ovtcharov (Hameln/Orenburg)'s successful tournament debut as number one in the table tennis world at the Europe Top 16 in Montreux. In the first German final duel in the 48-year history of the tournament, the world number three defeated the defending champion, who had risen to the top of the ranking at the beginning of the year, by a surprisingly clear score of 4-0 and thus won the prestigious title for the sixth time. At the same time, the German champion ended Ovtcharov's top 16 record streak after three successes in a row. By successfully avenging final defeats by three top-class players against Ovtcharov in the last six months, Boll set two tournament records after his last title win in the continental ranking competition in 2010: Before the 36-year-old, no player since 1971 had won again 16 years after his first victory can triumph, and there have never been eight years between two tournament victories by a player. Boll, who is only missing one more success to equal the title record of Sweden's idol Jan-Ove Waldner (seven wins from 1984 to 1996), received 6000 euros in prize money for his tournament victory. Ovtcharov was able to console himself with a bonus of 4000 euros. For both Boll and Ovtcharov, participation in the final also meant automatic qualification for the World Cup in Paris in the fall.
