South Tyrol's table tennis scene is in mourning

Santifaller was born on July 18, 1932 and was a legend in the sport of table tennis. She started playing table tennis as a child and took part in an Italian championship for the first time in 1949. Since then, Edith has won an incredible 112 Italian championship titles (the last two in Lucera in 2016).

Edith Santifaller was a teacher and then director at the Rudolf Stolz elementary school in Bozen. She was also a coach and companion for the national table tennis team. For 38 years, from 1978 to 2016, she was President of the Bolzano State Committee.

Santifaller was also a founding member of the Pfarrhof sports zone, where she was president for many years and most recently honorary president. She also founded the Transalpine Cup and the TT Recoaro Agostini Bozen club, which played at national level for many years.

Icon of South Tyrolean sport She is the only woman to have taken part in 17 World Veteran Championships without interruption, the last time she was in action in New Zealand in 2014. In total she won 11 medals. In 1992 she organized the Olympic qualification in Bolzano and also brought the Italian Open and many national team international matches to Bolzano.

Edith was a member of the ETTU and ITTF commission and received the Merit Award from the ITTF in 1999 - an award for people who have made great contributions to the sport of table tennis. In 1983, the then Italian President Sandro Pertini appointed her “Cavaliere della Repubblica” and in 2017 she received a Golden Badge of Honor from the State of Tyrol. Edith Huber Mair Santifaller was an icon of South Tyrolean sport.

Edith Huber Mair Santifaller is dead. South Tyrol's table tennis icon died on Saturday night at the age of 87.
