Table tennis: Boll number one in the world rankings for the fourth time

Dusseldorf (SID) Record European champion Timo Boll is number one in the table tennis world rankings for the fourth time. After his sixth triumph at the Europe Top 16 in Montreux at the beginning of February, the Düsseldorfer climbed from third to first place, making him the oldest world number one in history. The world association ITTF published its new ranking on Tuesday. With the clay elevation of Boll, the first German changing of the guard at the top of the world rankings took place. Dimitrij Ovtcharov (Hameln/Orenburg), who pushed China's Olympic champion and world champion Ma Long out of first place in December, is ranked third in the new ranking. "When Dimitrij Ovtcharov came to me a few days ago and said that I was number one in the world rankings again in March, I initially thought it was a joke," said Boll, who "didn't want to hide a certain joy": "It's confirmation for my hard work over the last few months. It is also confirmation of my consistency." Boll, who celebrates his 8th birthday on March 37th, replaces Swedish legend Jan-Ove Waldner as the oldest number one. The 1992 Olympic champion took over the top position in the ranking in October 1997 at the age of 31. Boll became number one for the first time in January 2003 and took the top position again for two months in the summer of the same year. In March 2011 he was once again at the top of the rankings.
