“Ironfrini” celebrates farewell

Back in January, the Meran native, who celebrated her 43rd birthday at the beginning of June, decided to celebrate her farewell at the Ironman Austria (3,8 km swimming, 180 km cycling, 42,2 km running) in Klagenfurt. There she was always able to climb onto the podium in her four starts in 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2008 and celebrated two of her greatest successes with the victory in 2007 and the personal best time of 8:59,45 hours set the following year. Today, however, placement and time were not the focus. “Ironfrini” just wanted to enjoy her last Ironman to the fullest and say goodbye to her fans properly.

Why does the Meran native draw a line under her active career? “I'm tired, both physically and mentally. Over the last 15 years, I have always tried to do my best, both in training and in races. It wasn't an easy decision, but I think that age also plays a crucial role in high-performance sport. At the age of 43, I believe that my sporting highlights are already behind me,” explains Niederfriniger on her Facebook page.

In her career, the woman from Passerstadt has competed in a total of 23 Ironmans. In addition to the four podium finishes in Klagenfurt, she made it into the top three eight more times. In Nice 3 she was crowned winner, in Brazil (2006), South Africa (2004 and 2007), China (2008) and Malaysia (2009) she came second, while in Arizona (2010) and Cozumel (2008) she was third highest Staircase climbed.

At her last Ironman in Klagenfurt this Sunday, Edith Niederfriniger took 13th place in the professional rankings. Victory went to the American Linsey Corbin, who prevailed in 8:42,42 hours ahead of the Swiss Simonee Brändli and the Austrian Lisa Hütthaler.

At the Ironman Austria in Carinthia, Edith Niederfriniger made her last major appearance on the international triathlon stage on Sunday.
