Verena Steinhauser: The “iron woman from Brixen” has big plans

As a girl, Verena often went running in Brixen with her sports-loving mother. Afterwards, the triathlon trainer Manuela Ianesi conveyed to the active blonde her passion for the three disciplines of swimming, cycling and running. Playful lightness then turned serious.

At 26, Verena has long been a world leader; she is a member of the police sports group. The woman from Brixen has been living in Pescara with her partner Simone for several years. The “iron athlete” survived the Corona period well. “I have even been vaccinated once, with Astra Zeneca. Apart from a fever for a few hours, there were no complications at all,” reports Steinhauser. She will soon receive her second dose in Rome. Construction on Fuerteventura “Steini” completed his advanced training for the Olympic season in Fuerteventura (Canary Islands). “We were there for a month and a half, were able to train really perfectly and also eat food outside. Therefore, the risk of infection was very low. I think I've improved the most in swimming. In any case, I increased my workload and completed up to three training sessions a day,” says the 26-year-old.

This Sunday we will travel to Japan. The World Tour of Triathletes starts in Yokohama on May 15th. Then week after week important competitions take place. “We’re finally starting. Everyone has to be in quarantine for four days, but people are happy to accept that. “I’m really looking forward to the comparison with the competition,” says the thoroughbred athlete. The Olympic ticket is almost immediately in your pocket When it comes to Olympic qualification, things are looking good for Steinhauser: “I’m competing in the World Cups in Yokohama, then in Arzachena on Sardinia and finally in Leeds. I leave out Portugal and Mexico. “Basically, I just have to finish in the competitions,” says Steinhauser: “But of course I want to achieve good results.”

She doesn't want to let any Olympic pressure arise. "That's the way it is. We have to be happy that the games are taking place. There won't be any spectators, but at least we athletes can prove ourselves. It's important to stay calm and not think too much about Tokyo. “It’s going to be a mental thing,” says Steinhauser.

She would have been very happy about the support from her parents on site. “During competition, it’s really good to see some familiar faces or to receive encouraging shouts.” The fine-tuning for the Summer Games begins in mid-June. “We are going to the altitude training camp in Livigno, 20 days before the opening of the Olympics,” says the triathlete.
